"Burningk- erm, Burningpaw?"

Burningpaw had been sleeping, but his ear twitched at the sound of Cherrypaw's familiar voice, one eye opening a time as he adjusted to the world, glancing over at where Cherrykit's nest was. It was still quite late, he could hear the sounds of the other Apprentices breathing softly in their sleep around them.

He hummed, adjusting himself so he was facing her, resting his chin on his paws against the side of the nest, "Can't sleep?" He asked, studying her expression in what little light they got cast from the moon through the entrance.

He himself wasn't having much of a problem adjusting to his new home, but he knew some of the new Apprentices were, perhaps Cherrypaw was one of them.

The tufty-eared gray she-cat nodded gently, glancing down at her paws in embarrassment, "Do they... Do they have any more news of the... Flooding?" She asked him, looking up nervously. He watched as she shivered slightly, presumably at the thought of the cold water.

"Nothing much, dad said it didn't look too bad though" Burningpaw assured her, yawning widely, able to see why she was nervous now, "and even if it does flood in the lower territory where the old Camp used to be, we're high up enough here, Owlpaw's just thinking out-loud you shouldn't pay him too much attention, the older Warriors would know if something like that had happened in the past," he offered her a smile, although he was unsure if she'd be able to see it in the dark, but as she offered him one back he presumed her eye sight was good enough to see in the half-light.

As he didn't want to wake up any of the other Apprentices, he cleared his throat lightly, "do you want to come over here and chat so we don't wake anyone?" His nest was bigger than hers so it would be easier for her to get into his instead of the other way round.

Cherrypaw nodded shyly, uncurling herself from her own nest and making her way over to his, sliding in beside him with a comfortable purr, "Thank you Burningpaw..."
He felt her head rest lightly on his shoulders causing a strange burning sensation to spread through his body, he felt his body tense at the contact, before scolding himself for being so silly and relaxing again.

For a moment Burningpaw had been worried he was about to have another one of those visions, involving her, but this, he quickly realised was different, he'd just been surprised and was now feeling a little flustered, he wasn't sure why, but it wasn't necessarily a bad feeling.
Turning his own head Burningpaw licked her ear appreciatively, "Don't worry, we'll be safe up here" he assured her again, promising that he would be sure to seek her out as much as he could over these next few days. He'd get a warning if something bad was about to happen to her, and he'd be able to keep her safe from it, perhaps this gift wasn't such a bad thing after all.

But just to be sure that he wouldn't miss a day, he turned back to her, "Until all this flooding and stuff is over... do you... do you maybe want to stay here... you know as it makes you feel safer and stuff?" That was the most clumsily phrased question he'd ever asked, and he hoped that she didn't find it weird.

"I... I would love that, Burningpaw," her voice stammered a little, worrying him that she felt like she had to say yes, but she was still smiling, so hopefully that meant she was happy to.

"Thank you... Again... You really are the best. No matter what Hookpaw says. Thank you for being my friend." She meowed awkwardly.

"What Hookpaw says?" He raised a brow, he knew that the tom was a little suspicious of him, but he didn't actually know he'd said anything to Cherrypaw about him. The idea didn't annoy him really as Cherrypaw was still here so clearly she hadn't listened or paid heed, but he was curious all the same.

Over in the next nest along Scorchpaw let out an irritable grunt in his sleep, so Burningpaw lowered his voice again, knowing full well that his brother would not be happy if he woke up before he was ready to, his heart really did go out to the poor tom who had been given his brother to Mentor, but who knew, maybe Scorchpaw would learn a little modesty before becoming a Warrior.

"He says that you're a grumpy arrogant tom who doesn't think of anyone other than himself and because of your daddy, you'll only 'break my heart'," Cherrypaw's voice was quiet as she spoke, she shook her head quickly and flattened her ears, adding, "But I don't believe one word of that. I think you're one of the best cats in this Clan. And I don't really have an opinion towards your family either. I won't ever let what others say get in the way of my opinion towards you. After all, you're the nicest cat I know."

Her pale amber eyes were shimmering with emotion as she spoke, gently touching her nose to his cheek.

Break her heart? What on earth had Hookpaw meant by that? As he didn't understand it he wasn't sure whether he should feel offended or not, but he could certainly take offense at the rest of it.
Where did anyone get the impression he was arrogant from, well, clearly someone who had never spent a couple of seconds with Scorchpaw that was for sure, he could show them what real arrogance was. He was stubborn, yes, and he could become easily disinterested in those that didn't interest him, but he certainly wasn't arrogant.
And of course it was never fair to throw his parents back at him, Cats that didn't know them had no right to judge them. Hookpaw didn't even begin to enter into the area of those who held a right to comment.

But he didn't let himself get angry, after all Cherrypaw was the only one here and he didn't want her to think he was cross with her. He nuzzled Cherrypaw's head in response to her nose against his cheek, thanking her for the gesture. Cherrypaw really was a sweet she-cat, what he'd done to deserve a friend like her he didn't know.

He was pulled by his thoughts by the sound of Cherrypaw yawning beside him, "I'm sorry if I fall asleep on you... thank you again... I probably would have... been up all night... Shall we try and do something tomorrow together?" She seemed like she was about to drift off before adding, "Assuming you don't have to train or anything..."

"Doing something tomorrow sounds good" Burningpaw agreed, smiling as she began to drift off to sleep against him, he let out a wide yawn himself, resettling himself in the nest, head resting slightly against her head, folding his ears flat in a relaxed way.
"Goodnight" he whispered, unsure if she was already asleep.
A short BurningCherry story based on an RP between myself and Addydorable
I always struggle in converting RPs to stories, so sorry if it's a bit jerky in places ;^_^
